High Scalability at Low Cost
Adtran’s virtual controller allows you to drop a virtual appliance on a server and go, handling over 1500 APs with no additional costs! Separating the control plane and data plane makes for great scalability, allowing the AP to direct traffic without sending it through the controller. Greatly reduce costs compared with old controller technology! Avoid costly controller upgrades as WiFi evolves. If you want a turnkey controller they are also available at an aggressive price.
Direct Data Paths
Their access points make traffic decisions locally, not requiring traffic to flow to the controller. This is a great benefit on any network, and allows branch office APs without a local controller and without having to backhaul wireless traffic to the main office controller. This provides for lower latency and jitter by lowering the number of hops on the network, especially important for audio (VoIP) and video. It also allows for much better scalability.
Highest Availability, Nonstop Infrastructure
For hitless failover you can employ VMware’s failover features, or vWLAN’s internal failover functionality, keeping each AP in contact with two controllers. Failover can occur without a single packet lost. Who else provides this, and for free?
Security at the Edge
vWLAN puts full stateful firewall functionality at the AP, enforcing policies at the access point instead of letting unwanted traffic traverse your network to get to a conventional wireless controller. Combined with device fingerprinting you can deploy flexible policies based on end user device or OS.
Advanced RF Functionality
Adtran’s Dynamic RF can continuously evaluate the RF environment and modify the AP’s RF power and channel settings as needed to achieve optimal RF performance. If an AP goes down, the neighboring APs will automatically increase their power levels to fill the coverage hole.
Traditional band steering is often approached unidirectionally (2.4 GHz to 5 GHz) and steers clients using pre-association steering (upon first connection). The result is an oversaturated 5 GHz spectrum with slow initial associations or connection times, and in some cases, no connection at all.
DynamicSteering is ADTRAN’s innovative solution for steering dual-band clients between radios. Using bidirectional steering, DynamicSteering ensures that clients are connected to the best radio based on their signal conditions. Bidirectional band steering includes upgrade steering (2.4 GHz to 5 GHz) and downgrade steering (5 GHz to 2.4 GHz) which allows optimal utilization of both bands.
